Jaredite Nation Tour
You will be taken to areas described in the book “Willka Wasin Wiraqocha: The House of the Lord” by Van C. Evans.

In recent years, Peruvian archaeologists have uncovered and restored ancient sites along the desert coast and green highlands of Peru. One of these is Caral, just 182 kilometers (113 miles) north of Lima. Wikipedia states, “It is attributed an antiquity of 5,000 years and it is considered the oldest city in the Americas and one of the oldest in the world. No other site has been found with such a diversity of monumental buildings or different ceremonial and administrative functions in the Americas as early as Caral.”

No other ruins in the Americas are more qualified to be the Jaredite nation. Come with us to visit this oldest civilization in the Western Hemisphere and experience the earliest temple dispensation. We will drive up the coast to not only see Jaredite ruins but also see Nephite-era temples and the residue of evidence that they indeed had sacred ceremonies revealed unto them.

If you can travel for more than 9 days, after adding this tour, you can add on other excursions. See the Add On’s below.

Itinerary
Itinerary
This 9-day tour highlights all the most ancient temples in the western hemisphere.
Day 1: Fly to Peru (WEDNESDAY)

Begin your journey to Peru's vibrant capital city. These flights almost always arrive at night. You will be met by Van Evans or his associate. Be certain to wear your Southern Cross Expeditions cap as you exit customs so we can recognize you. We will probably check in for our flight the next day and then transfer to the Holiday Inn hotel less than 3 minutes from the airport parking lot. No need to buy water or exchange money yet.

Day 2: Caral (THURSDAY)

Drive up to Caral and walk through the site of pyramids and temples. Then continue on to Casma to spend the night.

Day 3: Temple of Sechin (FRIDAY)

In the morning we will visit the Temple of Sechin, which is considered to be the oldest temple in the New World (Early Formative Period, 2000 B.C. – 1200 B.C.). This temple remained hidden until 1937 when the Peruvian archaeologist Julio Tello discovered and recorded its existence. Tello sensed there was something special about this temple and wrote that its discovery was “one of the most important events in recent times in the history of archaeological research.” It was only uncovered in 1985. This temple has a holy of holies and the signs and tokens are engraven on bas-relief stelas that form the exterior walls. After lunch we will drive along the coast to Trujillo.

Day 4: Chan Chan, La Huaca del Sol, La Huaca de la Luna (SATURDAY)

Visit Nephite- and Lamanite-era ruins of Chan Chan, La Huaca del Sol, La Huaca de la Luna. After a long day, we will take a night flight from Trujillo to Lima, spent the night at the Holiday Inn.

Day 5: Lima and Temples of Pachacamac and Punchaucancha (SUNDAY)

We will drive just south of Lima to visit the Temples of Pachacamac and Punchaucancha. Designed with the Holy Path in mind, this temple on the coast had places that required a recommend to attend. The Southern Sanctuary, consisted of five rooms. The temple patrons gathered in the chapel of the half-covered patio and from there passed through each of the five rooms before arriving at the sacred red chamber of nine niches, possibly a “holy of holies.” There was so much wealth in this temple that even though the Spaniards claimed that most of the wealth was hidden before they arrived, what they (the Spaniards) took was so great that it was impossible to calculate and required more than 10,000 men to carry the loot to Cajamarca.

Day 6: Chavin de Huantar (MONDAY)

Early morning flight to Huaraz, the Switzerland of Peru. We will leave the luggage at the hotel and take the car to the distant ruins of Chavin de Huantar. These mysterious temples have great underground passages. Seven stories below the surface you can find ceremonial rooms. Finally, after going through the maze, we can see the Lanzón (at left), the large diety the culture worshipped. The Lanzón is a figure displaying the sign of Ayni. See the video here. Spend the night in Huaraz and free time to roam the main street.

Day 7: Huaraz (TUESDAY)

Free time to roam Huaraz and we can visit a laguna for those inclined to hike a little.

Day 8: Colonial Lima (WEDNESDAY)

Early flight back to Lima. This morning we will visit the colonial sector of Lima, including the presidential palace and main plaza de armas. We’ll walk to the colonial San Francisco church and tour the underground catacombs to see the bones of thousands. Then we can head over to Miraflores for last minute shopping or on to Larco Mar to have our final tour dinner on the cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. After dinner, the bus will take us to the airport for our late night flight back to the USA.

Day 9: Arrive home. Get some Rest! (THURSDAY)

But if you don't think 9 days is enough adventure and you crave more, try one of our Add On’s.

Recuay (Day 6)
Temple of Paramonga on the coast (Day 2)

Chan Chan. See the stairway to eternity motif all along the base. (Day 4)

Van C. Evans served a church mission in Peru (’79–’81) and is founder of Southern Cross Expeditions and Generations Humanitarian. He has led dozens of tourist, humanitarian, and archeological expeditions to Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia since 1998. More than 900 people from 8 to 80 years old have joined him on these adventures, and so far, everyone has survived. And quite a few have come back several times more! He owned an ecotourism resort in the Peruvian Amazon from 2000-2006 and as of 2024 has been to Peru 82 times. He is fluent in Spanish and conversant in Portuguese and Quechua (which he learned as a missionary on horseback in the high Andes).

He has graduate degrees from the University of Utah and the University of Pennsylvania. He was trained as a research sociologist (similar to anthropology) at Indiana University–Purdue University, where he received his doctorate in Philanthropic Studies. He has published academic articles and book chapters. He is the author of Willka Wasin Wiraqocha — The House of the Lord.
