Christ’s Ministry in the Americas: A Testimony Written in the Land

For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, South America is regarded as a land rich in divine purpose. Following His resurrection, the Savior told His disciples in the Old World, “Other sheep I have, which are not of this fold” (John 10:16). We as Latter-day Saints understand that He visited the Americas as recorded in the Book of Mormon, ministering to the Nephites and Lamanites. This sacred event, preserved in the book of 3 Nephi, is a cornerstone of our testimony of His love for all of His children.

Christ’s influence extended even further across the lands of the Americas. Many faithful Latter-day Saints view the remnants of ancient civilizations in South America as witnesses to the Savior’s teachings among His “other sheep.” Sites like Machu Picchu, Tiwanaku, and Raqch’i hold evidence the He did, as their ruins reveal remarkable structures that echo the ingenuity and spiritual devotion of peoples who sought after divine light across the world. While the Book of Mormon’s primary setting is believed to focus on regions in Mesoamerica, South America also offers insights into how ancient peoples were touched by Christ’s ministry.

Sacred Signs in Ancient Civilizations

LDS teachings remind us that Christ’s visit to the Americas brought blessings and peace to the Nephite nation, along with covenants that echoed His ministry in the Old World. The temples and ordinances, as well as signs and tokens, have always served as a testimony of the Savior’s covenant with His children. In South America, remnants of ancient temples, such as the Temple of Wiraqocha in Raqch’i, stand as a testament to the spiritual witness of early peoples. The legend of the “Bearded White God,” often identified as Viracocha(In Quechua, “Viracocha” translates to “Sea Foam” or “Lake Foam”. It also refers to the creator and supreme deity in pre-Inca and Inca mythology,) is another fascinating element in South American culture that proves a deep knowledge of Christ.

They inspire thoughtful contemplation of how God’s hand has shaped history to prepare His children for the fullness of the gospel. The parallels between these truths recorded in the Book of Mormon serve as a reminder of the Savior’s universal mission to gather all of God’s children unto Him.
